Growing up in a house filled with jazz music and jazz musicians in North London, I never realized at that time how extraordinary it was. It wasn’t until decades later, after our family moved to America, that I began to appreciate just how much Mum’s passion for jazz music truly was and still is. Our journey took us to Fallbrook, California, "The Avocado Capital of the World". Mum continued playing the flute and took lessons from her mentor, teacher and friend, flutist Lori Bell while working in the pro shop at a local golf course. On quiet days, she would play her flute in the shop to pass the time. One afternoon, a handsome gentleman golfer came into the shop and complimented her playing. He introduced himself: “Jim Mooney is my name. I play trumpet and piano, and I have a home recording studio in Temecula.” That chance meeting began a wonderful friendship. Mum soon began going to Jim and his wife LaVerne’s home every Friday. Jim set up the microphones. They recorded countless jazz standards, capturing the performances spontaneously all in a single take. There was no overthinking, no endless rehearsals, just musicians listening to one another and making music. Jim passed away in 2015. Not long afterwards, Mum had to retire from playing the flute due to the onset of essential tremor, but the music never left her. She still enjoys playing the piano and, in one of the sweetest continuations of her musical legacy, teaching piano to her great-grandson, Archer. For this album, I asked Mum to select a collection of her favorite recordings from those Friday sessions with Jim. Listening back, I was struck by the warmth, spontaneity, and spirit captured in those performances. I was able to isolate the individual instruments, remix the recordings, and carefully add a few instruments into the open spaces, while preserving the heart and character of the original sessions. These recordings are more than jazz standards. They are snapshots of friendship, family, and a remarkable musical chapter in Moy Page’s life. They are the sound of Fridays in Temecula, when Mum and Jim would get together, press record, and simply play.
